About this project

What we’re building and why

NOAA APT Receiver was one of Gigabyte Grove’s first hands-on weather-radio projects: a Raspberry Pi and SDR-based station for receiving analog Automatic Picture Transmission imagery from NOAA polar-orbiting weather satellites.

The system used a 137 MHz receiving antenna, SDR hardware, filtering/amplification, and automated decoding to turn overhead satellite passes into locally received weather images. It was documented publicly so the same basic station could be reproduced by other hobbyists.

This project is now retired. NOAA’s legacy POES/APT fleet reached end-of-life and the Grove moved its satellite-weather attention toward newer digital and geostationary systems rather than continuing to treat APT as an active platform.
